Correction of date of Dr. Jagan’s Assault
DEAR EDITOR,
Regarding the letter “Hinds Right on Kwayana but” (KN May 17), the attack on Dr. Jagan took place in 1968. Dr. Rodney was banned from Jamaica in October 1968. Dr. Jagan was assaulted at a protest rally in solidarity with Rodney. At the time Bro. Kwayana was in the bad books of the PNC and not listened to, and I am not sure if African youths would have heeded his reprimand of their actions. Burnham and the PNC were deathly afraid of Dr. Rodney, and would have preferred that he not come to Guyana.
Eyewitnesses to the incident informed me that the intention of the hoodlums sent by Burnham and the PNC was to stir up racial tension and Dr. Jagan did not make “a big scene” of the incident.
Dr. Rodney was denied employment by Burnham and the PNC at UG after getting approval from the UG Board.
