Re: NCN obligations to the people
Dear Sir,
The Alliance For Change, mindful of the statements made by the Hon. Attorney General Anil Nandlall on May 2, 2013 at an event hosted by H.E. Brent Hardt to mark World Press Freedom Day 2013, hereby calls on the National Communications Network (NCN) to honour the statements of the Attorney General.
In his statements the Honourable Attorney General alluded to the destruction of entire societies brought on by an irresponsible media. It is in this context that the Alliance For Change impresses upon NCN that this Party must be afforded the ‘right-of-reply’.
This is not the first occasion that the AFC has had cause to write your company urging that this basic
principle of journalism be respected and upheld. [Reference our letters of 12 October 2012 and 5 November, 2012]. The right of reply ensures that the public is presented with facts and opinions from all sides and fulfills the obligation of the State owned media agency to provide information on matters of national importance.
Providing information from one political party only, is undemocratic, unpatriotic and can fuel divisions and the sort of destruction the Attorney General alluded to.
Also, in keeping with the expressed intent of the Attorney General that opposition parties ought not to suffer as a consequence of the denial of press freedom, the Alliance For Change calls on NCN to make available airtime; as befits any political party of the National Assembly, for the broadcast of the views, positions and concerns of the AFC.
The Alliance For Change once again calls on NCN to fulfill its obligations to the people of Guyana by affording equitable coverage and access to opposition political parties.
