Four people were left homeless after fire of unknown origin destroyed a two-storey house at Second Street Grove, East Bank Demerara around 01:30 hrs yesterday.
A woman living near to the property said that her daughter heard an explosion and then saw the building on fire. According to the woman, the residents were unable to save anything. She said that three people occupied the top flat and one male occupant lived in the bottom flat.
The building was already fully ablaze when a fire tender arrived on the scene and firefighters were only able to prevent the flames from spreading to other properties.
But some residents lamented the fact that there is no fire station nearby.
Up to late yesterday Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle said that investigators were still trying to ascertain the cause of the fire.
