The National Sports Commission (NSC) has coordinated a Teachers’ Table Tennis Coaching Course for Persons With Disability (PWD). The Programme was held during October 2-5 at the National Gymnasium under the guidance of Organiser, Wilton Spencer and National Coach, Linden Johnson.

The aim of the course was to equip the teachers with the basic skills to allow them to conduct training within their varying institutions.
David Rose School for Handicap Children, Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre and The Special Needs School, East Bank Demerara was the institutions that participated.
The five participants namely Marvin Lewis, Oneka Chiddie, Rita Joseph, Faranaz Haneof and Marcia Lewis, who completed the course, were exposed to the generic coaching principles, included breaking down barriers with table tennis balls, introduction of the 4 basic strokes, grips, eye and hand coordination, ready position, table position, service and return of service and organising tournament-singles.
They were also introduced to Para Table Tennis: (1) Classification System; different types and causes of impairment; Involvement in various parts of the body (i.e. playing arm versus non playing arm, legs versus arms); Dissimilar severities on involvement (i.e. mild, moderate or severe) and (2) Classes in table tennis for the disabled, there are currently ten classes in the International Paralympic Table Tennis Committee: Classes 1 to 5 for wheel chair players (sitting table tennis) and Classes 6 to 10 for standing players (standing table tennis).
