Two jailed for separate offences
Two persons were yesterday jailed by Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court after they pleaded guilty to two separate offences.
Neville Mahase, 47, said to be a street dweller, admitted to having an instrument used for smoking cocaine in his possession.
The man who claimed that he has no family and no dependants was sentenced to one year imprisonment together with a fine of $6000.
The other accused, Hassem Khan broke and entered the Roti Plus Restaurant on Sheriff Street and stole six eggs, a quantity of paint, one pack of steel wool, a quantity of knives and other kitchen utensils. The man told the court that he will plead guilty to the crime, but said that he didn’t steal the items.
The magistrate told Khan that a not guilty plea would be entered for him and the matter would go to trial, but the defendant held out that he did not want the matter to go to trial.
The matter was put down for a few minutes to give Khan the opportunity to decide how he wanted to plead. The man later confessed to stealing the items. He told the court that he used up the eggs but returned the paint and knifes to the owner of the shop.
Khan maintained that he has no one to bail him and wanted the matter to finish right away. He thanked the magistrate after she sentenced him to nine months imprisonment.
