– parents want academic aspect of camp to continue during the year
Head Coach of Fruta Conqueror Football Club Sampson Gilbert, the initiator of the Summer Camp which started five years ago, said that he is pleased with the progression of the camp which has been running over the past three weeks at Tucville ground.
Gilbert said the paramount part of this year’s programme from the previous four years is the academic aspect for the students/players, “This will allow the players to be all rounded in the field of the sport,” he said.
He noted that the parents are also giving a good feedback of the camp and want the continuance of the programme when school reopens to keep the players active.

The Students/Players being tutored by one of the Ministry of Education facilitators in the classroom yesterday afternoon in the academic section of the Football Summer Camp.
Gilbert, who is also in favour of continuing the programme, said that he will be approaching the Ministry of Education in relation to the availability of their facilitators to continue the programme with the youngsters throughout the remainder of the year, “I hope that at least two days a week the club can host a class in reading and comprehension for the children after the conclusion of the summer camp with the Ministry’s facilitators.”
Kaieteur Sport was also made to understand that an official from the Guyana Football Association (GFA) was invited to tutor the players about the laws of the game. The coach said that the laws will help the children to develop a better appreciation for the sport which includes the referees and their opponents during a match, “The children understanding the laws will help them appreciate the game more. With that understanding, they will appreciate the referees, their opponents based on the knowledge of the game and also the way they react from decisions made during a game.”
He added that Global Technology offered a 3 days computer crash course for the older children, “The course was an introduction to the various aspects of the computer and also the recent technology.”
In addition to the classes, it was revealed that the students/players from both age groups attended an educational tour at Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) (13-17 years) and the Guyana National Museum (7-12 years) during last week.
An official of the Ministry of Education also visited the camp to educate the youngsters on vital life skills which will guide them in their decision makings as they get older.
Apart from academic aspect of the camp, Gilbert related that the players are also improving on the technically aspect of the game.
The students will be awarded with school hampers at the Award Ceremony and will also receive individual awards based on their performance on Friday following the conclusion of the summer camp. (Juanita Hooper)
