Harry wins Shamshudin Farewell Golf Tournament

David Harry took first place at the Esau Shamshudin Farewell Golf Tournament played recently at the Lusignan Golf Club.
Playing off a 15 handicap, Harry shot 86 for a net 71, beating on a count back second place William Walker’s 77 (six handicap) whose 71 also took best gross score for the day. Third place went to John Tracy also with a gross 86 (15 handicap) net 71.
The higher scores reflected heavy rain the day before which transformed the course, with sodden fairways and waterlogged bunkers.
The result was the high handicap players who had been ascendant in recent weeks, struggled to reach the greens in regulation.   At the same time there had not been enough rain to slow the ball on the greens which remained relatively fast and therefore challenged a crucial part of the game, putting.
The event was well attended by 35 players, many of whom came out to acknowledge the contributions of Shamshudin to the club.
In speeches after the event, Dr Ramshingh, Patrick Prashad, Jerome Khan, Maurice Solomon and club president Brian Hackett all mentioned Shamshudin’s competitive spirit combined with great congeniality on and off the course.
In his comments, Shamshudin said despite departing for Canada, Lusignan, where he has played for 18 years, would always be his home club, and he would continue to support it through various fundraising events overseas while hoping to return frequently as much for the golf as for the camaraderie.
