Athletes to stomp their authority today in Linden’s Developmental Meet

Athletes from across Guyana will be looking to stomp their authority today in Linden at the McKenzie

Sports Club ground for the first time of the year when the Upper Demerara School Track Club hosts the third Developmental Meet on the 300m perimeter ground.
The battle for supremacy begins from 10am on the ground which spectators and athletes witnessed last year’s President/Jefford Classic as the events get under the starter’s orders and the officials signal the commencement for the field events.
Fire will be added once gain on the track when the jumpers are called to the pit to earn their bragging rights in both long and triple jumps. PPYC will attempt to clean sweep the women’s long and triple jump when Juanita Hooper, Alita Moore, Marica Isaacs, Tracey Moses, Cindy Fraser, Natasha Alder and Iesha Parris register their distances in pit.
The girls (Juanita Hooper, Alita Moore, Marcia Isaacs, and Tracey Moses) did clean sweeps in the Triple and Long Jump intimidating the other competitors when the Guyana Defence Force Athletic Track Club hosted their Developmental Meet last Sunday at the GDF ground.
IGG gold medalist, Hooper, leaped to 10m94cm in the triple jump ahead of IGG triple gold medalist Moore’s leap of 10m81cm, teammate Marcia Isaacs jumped 10m64cm to take third place.
Talented Tracey Moses sprung to an impressive 5m89cm in the Long Jump while Isaacs and Hooper leaped 5m73cm and 5m21cm respectively.
Guyana Defence Force boys Ryan Scott, Leon Bishop and Quacy Payne (GDF) will be contesting against PPYC Troy Williams, Upper Demerara’s Winston Caesar, Marlon Moshette, Bevon Nobel and Paris Cadogan in the Long Jump. The men’s long jump will be of more fire than the females as the Lindeners will be coming all out to take the jumps from the GDF’s boys.
GDF’s Scott took the top spot on the podium with a best leap of 6m98cm, Leon Bishop and Quacy Payne leaps of 6m84cm and 6m63cm were second and third. Scott also won the Triple jump after bounding to 13m27cm ahead of PPYC’s Williams (13m18cm) and Marvin Teniss (11m58cm).

PPYC’s males duplicated the females’ clean sweep in the Discus with Juilo Sinclair, Cordell English and Shaquille Scott throws of 39m49cm, 31m55cm and 27m22cm respectively.
The track will be scorched when the guns from various athletic clubs clash again to make their name when the track events get under the starter’s orders.
The lineup for the women’s 100m will see Letitia Myles of the GDF Club, Alita Moore, Tiffany Carto and Leota Bobb of the PPYC, Tirono Mitchelle of Mercury Fast Laners and the Daniels Sisters of Running Brave Athletic Club just to name a few.
Last Sunday, Alicia Fortune of Running Brave stormed to a splendid 11.6 seconds in the women’s 100m at the Developmental Meet after recovering from an injury endured last year while training. Alita Moore, who separated herself from the group from the start of the race clocked 12.1 seconds and settled for third when CARIFTA team athlete, Letitia Myles bolted to the line to clock 11.9 seconds.
Carto clocked 12.2 seconds behind Myles (12.0) in the 100m a few weeks ago when the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) hosted their CARIFTA Games Trials at the Police Sports Club ground.
Once all races at today’s Developmental Meet are run in the Open category then the women’s 100m and even 200m will be an interesting when the senior and junior athletes vie for supremacy in the absence of the current sprint queen who will be competing  today at the Falcon Games at the Dwight Yorke Stadium.
The male version of the two sprint races (100m and 200m) will see rivals trying to alienate their opponents on the track. Winston Caesar of Upper Demerara School Athletic Track Club will run his second 100m for the year according to his coach Johnny Gravesande. The athlete who is much talented in the field events (long and triple jump) ran 11.02 seconds to earn second place in the men 100m at the AAG Developmental meet. Patrick King of GDF took the top spot in the event in 11 seconds.
Sensational Chavez Adegay a CARIFTA qualifier clocked 10.2 seconds in last Sunday’s Developmental Meet, GDF’s Akeem Stewart and Jermaine Newton shared the other two top positions in times of 10.4 seconds and 10.6 seconds.
Stephan James and Shawn Semple of PPYC will collide again in the 400m, while the Hooper’s sister (Natricia and Natrena) and GDF’s Tiffany Smith will meet when the race gets underway.
Kevin Bailey who took his first easy victory for the year in the men’s 1500m in 4:18.6 seconds will be looking to repeat his performance when he and Nathaniel ‘Brother’ Giddings collide at the start line. Devon ‘Scooby’ Barrington and Giddings who were not present at last Sunday’s Meet ran 4:18.6 seconds and 4:18.8 seconds respectively.
CARIFTA gold medalist Jevina Straker also showed that she was a force to be reckoned again in the 1500m after outsprinting, CARIFTA Team athlete of Running Brave, Andrea Foster to take a trouble-free win in a time of 4:56.6 seconds. Foster was in a distant second in 5:04.2 seconds ahead of Cassey George’s 5:08.7 seconds.
This meet will be a gauge for athletes who are eligible for the upcoming National under 23 Championship which is slated for Police Sports Club ground on April 29. The championship was won by Police Progressive Youth Club last year.
