A mini bus “tout” who was involved in a $60 stabbing incident that left a mini bus conductor hospitalised with a knife sticking out of his abdomen, was yesterday remanded to jail when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry for a charge of unlawful and malicious wounding.
Thirty seven-year-old Dwight Lela of Lot 128 Cross Street, Georgetown was accused of stabbing 45-year-old Jeewan Lall on March 8 near the route 45 minibus park, outside the Stabroek Market.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Lionel Harvey alleged that on the day in question about 16:00 hours, the victim was sitting on a wooden stomp next to the bus park when the defendant approached him and accused him of blocking the door of the minibus that he was reportedly filling at the time.
The prosecutor continued that Lela “chucked” the victim, prompting Lall to arm himself with a piece of wood to defend himself against the accused who was reportedly carrying a knife.
During the subsequent confrontation, Lela stabbed Lall in his abdomen. The knife broke in two, leaving the blade of the weapon in the victim’s belly.
Lela then sought to make good his escape but he was apprehended by public spirited citizens who later handed him over to the police.
The prosecution requested that the defendant be remanded to jail as the victim had to undergo surgery, and although he had been discharged from the hospital, he still had to be making regular visits to the institution for medical check-ups.
