The Berbice Cricket Board’s (BCB) ambitious 2012 Coaching programme on Friday last received a massive boost from Food for The Poor (Guy) Inc. when the charitable organisation handed over $300,000 worth of cricket gear to the Board.
The presentation was done by FFP’s Executive Director Leon Davis to Chairman of the BCB Competitions Committee Chairman Carl Moore at the Scots Church Annex building, Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The Board received eight boxes of balls and a collection of gear which included stumps, batting pads, batting gloves, wicketkeeping pads, gloves and bats.
Public Relations Officer and Chairman of the BCB Special Events Committee, Hilbert Foster, praised Food for The Poor and Mr. Davis for investing heavily in Berbice cricket and expressed his delight at the partnership between the Board and FFP.
The Board in 2012, Foster disclosed would be placing more emphasis on coaching and to date has completed five special clinics and a one-day Academy in West Berbice. Among other upcoming Coaching programmes are, the senior and junior elite training, junior captaincy seminar, fielding clinic and the annual one-week cricket academy.
Foster also informed the gathering that next week the Board would be unveiling a massive coaching programme with a major sponsor in Georgetown.
Senior coach, Julian Moore, in expressing gratitude to Food for The Poor on behalf of fellow coaches Winston Smith, Michael Hyles-Franco and Floyd Benjamin said that their main efforts in 2012 would be to properly groom each young Berbician player with a view of fulfilling their full potential. The cricket gear, Moore stated would assist the coaches to achieve their intended objective.
Davis complimented the Board for their proactive list of programmes and expressed his satisfaction of progress made in the sport in Berbice. Davis called on the BCB to maintain its high standard of work while issuing a call to all other sporting organisations in Guyana to emulate the Board as sports was important to national development.
