The owners of the ‘K&K Service Station’ located at Unity Village, East Coast Demerara, are now counting their losses after one of their employees claimed he was kidnapped and robbed of over $8M in cash and cheques on Monday afternoon.
Reports are that the clerk, identified as 25-year-old Joel Ali, was sent to make a deposit at a bank on Camp Street, Georgetown and that the incident took place afterwards.
Ali is a clerk attached to the H. Nauth and Sons Construction Company which also owns the service station.
According to a police press release, Ali was driving his car along South Road when another vehicle hit him from behind. He exited his car and was confronted by two other men who came out of the vehicle that had struck his. They reportedly held Ali at gunpoint and forced him back into his vehicle.
The police release said that the two perpetrators then blindfolded Ali and took him to an unknown destination where he was assaulted and robbed of $4M cash and a cheque valued at $4M. He was then tied up after which the men escaped in his black Toyota Raum (PNN 5004).
Kaieteur News understands that about 03:00 hr yesterday, Ali managed to free himself and found that he was on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway. He made his way to the Police Patrol Base on the highway where he reported the matter. He is being detained as investigations continue.
One of the owners, identified as “Mr. Nauth”, speaking from Berbice last evening, told Kaieteur News that he had received a report of the incident.
He explained that it is standard procedure that his company’s driver would take the money and cheques in their vehicle and take it to the bank. The vehicle would be parked at the entrance of the bank where the clerk would be able to meet the driver, take the deposit into the bank, and return safely.
This did not happen on Monday.
A source told this newspaper, however, that Ali ended up taking the money to the bank in his vehicle. He was not seen from or heard from again until yesterday.
