With its primary aim of providing the opportunity for children between the ages of 11-13 years to become proficient in the basics of football, the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Powerade Academy is set to recommence tomorrow at the Banks DIH ground, Thirst Park.
The Academy which started last November was interrupted due to the inclement weather in addition to the unavailability of the ground which was assigned for other commitments.
However, President of the GFA Lt. Commander Vernon Burnett speaking with this newspaper outlined the importance of the Academy which he said apart from serving as an introductory channel for young aspiring footballers is also meant to teach them the rules of the game, how they could adapt to participating in well organised tournaments where the need to adhere to the rules and regulations that govern the sport are paramount, the opportunity to develop life skills such as discipline, commitment, team work and self confidence and provide healthy and beneficial activities, especially those from the inner city.
Burnett informed the event will be preceded by a tournament which had already started and the players who excel during the competition will be selected to attend the Academy with all matches and training sessions being conducted at the Thirst Park facility.
The players who’re expected to number 50 initially, before being trimmed to 25 with an additional five coming from a wild card pick will be under the guidance of Jimmy McLean, Denzil Thompson and Denis ‘Chow’ Hunte and sessions will run continuously.
The tournament will be divided into group and knockout stages with the winning and second placed finishers being presented with medals, while the respective clubs will receive $100,000 and $50,000.
There will also be incentives for outstanding individual performances, Most Disciplined Team and the best goal scored.
