A labourer who stole two bunches of plantains at the Stabroek Market on February 15 was yesterday ordered to pay $10,000 fine or face six months imprisonment after he admitted to taking the goods as payment for unpaid services rendered to a stall owner.
Thirty –seven- year- old Orin Jacobs yesterday pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny which read that on the day in question he stole two bunches of plantains valued at $7,500 – property of Omesh Persaud.
The police alleged that the stall owner was at the time attending to customers when the defendant pulled the plantains from the stall and ran away.
Jacobs however contended that he was not paid after he had finished selling plantains for Persaud. He told the court that he never stole plantains from Persaud, but instead, he was given some loose plantains that were not worth the mentioned amount of money, to sell. He said that after performing previous jobs for the complainant he advised the man that if he did not pay him, he would keep the plantain money for himself.
He said he received about 40 plantains from Persaud, for which he only collected $700.
Jacobs said he was later arrested after Persaud reported the matter to the police.
Jacobs was advised to pay the fine or accept the six-month jail alternative.
