DEAR EDITOR,
I visited Guyana recently and was stunned when I cleared Customs to find what happened next.
I didn’t mind paying the porter to take my suitcases to the waiting minibus in the parking lot, but as we approached the trunk of the vehicle, there was a bunch of guys grabbing our suitcases and dumping them into the trunk of the vehicle then demanding money for their services.
I paid the porter to take my luggage to the waiting vehicle. There should be no other person there to harass me if I don’t want to be harassed.
Airports in Canada and the USA are harassment-free. Why is it that all Guyanese landing at Cheddi Jagan International have to face this kind of unwanted harassment? These individuals flocked the vehicle like a bunch of carrion crows – grabbing and throwing my luggage as if they were going crazy.
No one should be allowed to be in the parking lot to do this kind of thing. Can the relevant authorities please look into rectifying this problem? Jagdish
