-Team preparation in jeopardy as government lock out continues
The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) yesterday announced a list of 31 players in a provisional squad to prepare for the Regional 4-Day Tournament. The Regional 4-Day Tournament begins on February 3 and Guyana’s first match against the Leeward Islands is scheduled for the said date, at the National Stadium.
Despite naming the provisional squad, Guyana’s participation in the tournament is in doubt as the Cricket Board remains locked out of its offices at the GCC Ground Bourda.
The locks were placed on the doors to the GCB offices by Officials of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in December following the Government’s establishment of an Interim Management Committee under the leadership of Clive Lloyd.
As a result of the lock-out the GCB has no access to the resources and materials required for the adequate preparation of the team for the tournament. The GCB had hoped that the talks between the Government, WICB and GCB, facilitated by the CARICOM Secretariat on 12 January 2012, would have resulted in GCB being able to have access to the offices and resources required for the national teams to continue preparation as the GCB had 3 practice matches slated to be held in the month of January.
However, the agreement hammered out by the Secretary General has not yet been signed by the parties.
The WICB and the GCB stand ready to sign the agreement in its current form and await the Government representatives’ consultations with its principals.
Hon. Secretary of the GCB, Anand Sanasie, said today that “the current situation is a dire one and if things do not change dramatically this week we run the risk of the Guyana match at the National Stadium scheduled for February 3 being cancelled or at least moved from our venue.”
Sanasie added that, “The Directors of the WICB will be speaking later this week with a view to assessing the situation as it relates to Guyana’s participation in the tournament along with other matters relevant to the current situation here.”
