Ranks yesterday ensuring that the crowd remains orderly
on board the MV Kimbia which travels from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, after they were reports of overloading.
According to reports the police were called in sometime around 11:00hrs yesterday and they proceeded to order all the passengers from off the vessel.
Angry passengers were stalled up at the Transport Wharf in Kingston for almost 30 minutes. Eventually the officers managed to control the crowd and passengers had to hand in tickets in an orderly fashion.
Meanwhile, a few of the passengers expressed their disgust with the Transport Department.
One woman said that the problem could have been averted if a certain amount of tickets were sold.
“Sell a certain amount of tickets….so they would be no overcrowding,” the woman said.
The woman further told Kaieteur News there is need for a better ticketing system, also a larger boat.
Minister of Works Robeson Benn, at a press briefing, said that he was informed that persons who came late stormed on to the vessel. He said that officials, after noting that the vessel was overloaded, were instructed to call the police since it was a safety hazard.
