Gov’t condemns City’s move to prevent use of Promenade Gardens by Hits and Jams

-says its ministers will show up at Kashif and Shanghai Football tomorrow

The government yesterday condemned a move by the City Council to block entertainment house Hits and Jams from using the historical Promenade Gardens for its Night of Elegance Old Year’s Night Party.
The government said the move by Georgetown’s Mayor, Hamilton Green, was “obnoxious” and “alien” to modern day political practice. This is according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon.
He said the government viewed the move as supportive of a boycott call by the opposition alliance A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) for its call to blacklist groups that have supported the governing PPP/C.
“This Mayor and City Council is attempting to take us back to an era long gone…,” Luncheon said yesterday.
The Hits and Jams party has long been advertised for the venue, and international R&B superstar Omarion is billed to perform.
Luncheon did not specify what actions would be taken by the government to ensure the use of the Gardens by Hits and Jams, or whether it would make available another venue.
In addition, government ministers have undertaken to show up at the Providence Stadium tomorrow, in support of Kashif and Shanghai, another organization the government says APNU had urged a boycott on.
Kashif and Shanghai hosts the country’s biggest football tournament.
Government ministers will attend in “a show of support,” Luncheon stated.
