QC’s preparation the winning factor in schools’ chess championship

win at the recently held National Schools’ Chess Championship to constant practice. Cox disclosed that team members Ashwant Satamand, Shane Rampertab, Vickram Pattiram and himself engaged in practice sessions in the days leading up to the annual event. According to Cox, himself a former National Junior Chess Champion, the school’s chess club meets regularly on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Of the seven matches played at the National Stadium last weekend, Queens College “A” team scored five wins and drew with West Demerara Secondary and Mackenzie High. West Demerara placed second and Bishop’s High third in the team category of the tournament. Marian Academy copped fourth place. The MAE’s school team, after a promising start on the first day, spiraled downwards playing throughout the competition with a team member absent.
The final scores of the top schools’ teams in the seven round event are Queen’s College ‘A’ six points, West Demerara Secondary ‘B’ five and a half, Bishops High ‘A’ five and Marian Academy ’A’ four and a half points. Mackenzie High ‘B’, Diamond Secondary and West Demerara ‘A’ were all bundled on four points each.
In the individual category of the competition, Saeed Ali, student of Richard Ishmael and a regular tournament participant, scored first place with no losses, drawing two matches only with Ron Motilall of St. Joseph’s High and Joshua Pedro of Bishop’s High. Pedro secured second place. Davion Mars of St. Stanislaus College was adjudged third. Three other players were tied with Mars; Bobby Samuels of Queen’s College, Roberto Neto of Diamond Secondary and Orlanzo Boyce of St. Joseph’s High.
Director of Sport Neil Kumar, at the presentation ceremony immediately after the tournament, declared his support for chess and urged the young players to continue playing the game, now a regular feature at the Inter-Guiana Games. He also promised the introduction of a chess coach to assist players.
Nearly 80 students from almost 20 schools took part in the championship event sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in collaboration with the Guyana Chess Federation.
