Dear Editor,
A little more than five years ago, I unsuccessfully asked- “How does anyone become a bishop?”
I was motivated to advance that question as at that time I was disenchanted by some of the stories which were being told about those bishops who belong to neither the Catholic nor the Anglican churches.
I would like to refer to them as the ‘nuclear’ bishops who have emerged on the Guyanese religious platform less than 20 years ago.
So outrageous were some of the tales told about some of those bishops that I was forced to conclude, that if these were true, that I was the Pope. Five years later, I still have the same feelings.
I would not reiterate what I have already said about the importance of the office of a Bishop as outlined in the Holy Bible, except that anyone bearing that title is expected to be well grounded and knowledgeable of the word of God.
The answer to the question of how anyone becomes a Bishop was finally answered in an article titled “How to Become an Ordained Bishop”.
The process is quite tedious and may take several years, at the end of which time an individual would certainly be well versed in the contents of the Bible. Such a person would know what Jesus Christ would and would not do should He appear on earth today.
Without fear of justifiable contradiction, I would submit that under no circumstance Jesus Christ would cast a ballot for any political party if he were to appear on earth today. If I am permitted to say so, I would say that Jesus Christ has already ‘voted’ at Calvary more than 2000 years ago and would never meddle in such earthly affairs.
While I am not a Bible scholar, from my limited knowledge I can’t recall Jesus Christ or any of the other great men of the Bible being involved in an election of any sort. The appointment of great leaders of the Bible was almost always a matter of selection. Several examples can be sited in this regard.
First of all, when God wanted someone to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage, he selected Moses.
Secondly, when Moses attempted to be the maximum leader without delegating to his officers, on the advice of his father-in-law, he chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders.
Thirdly, when Moses was looking for a spokesman, God selected his brother Aaron to fill the position.
Fourthly, when Gideon was assembling a team to strike against the Midianites, God instructed Moses how to make his selection.
Finally, when Jesus Christ wanted to build a team of disciples, He hand- picked them.
It is quite possible that there are many instances – in the Bible- when teams and leaders were chosen or selected (or not elected) through a system of balloting.
I have highlighted the above simply to say that in God’s kingdom there will be no voting. The truth be told, I am unable to understand Bishop (Juan) Edghill’s conviction that Jesus Christ would cast a ballot if he was in Guyana today.
Could it be that he made a mistake for which he needs to now repent? Could it be that he has recklessly sinned against the Most High God whose wrath he is likely to incur? Or could it be that as a nuclear Bishop he is not familiar with the word of God?
Indeed, the Bishop ought to know that it is written in the book of Daniel that it is the Most High God who sets up or takes down kingdoms – every earthly government is appointed by God.
Therefore, there is no need for his son Jesus Christ to vote on earth.
I seem to also recall the Bible saying that the next time Jesus appears on earth, he would not be here to vote or perform other worldly chore.
On the contrary, it would be to gather those who have accepted Him as their personal savior. I sometimes wonder whether all the nuclear Bishops will be in that flock. Certainly, a number of them will be.
I think that I want to join others and submit that Bishop Edghill may be guilty of blasphemy for which he needs to speedily repent and humble himself for it is never a wise thing to grieve the Holy Spirit.
That being the case, I am afraid that I will have to pray for the Bishop. After all, I am the Pope and it is my duty to lead sinners to Jesus Christ.
