Leacock/Barckoy advance to Men’s semi-finals
Play resumed in the Trophy Stall Doubles tournament with Godfrey Lowden/Omar Persaud posting two convincing wins to claim the Men’s 40 Doubles title.
In the semifinals, the pair played some excellent tennis to outlast Berbicians Tony Ameerally /Mario Niamatalli 6-1 6-4. In the finals the pair went up against the crafty veteran Maxie Fox who teamed Japanese Sakae Yamada. The match was evenly contested with several long rallies as each team tried to seize the initiative. Lowden and Persaud’s better volleying turned out to be the difference as they were able to capitalise and put away the short balls more frequently. The match ended 6-4 6-2 to Lowden/Persaud who have been the dominant pair in the senior doubles categories in recent tournaments.
In the Men’s Doubles, top seeds Leyland Leacock/Gilbert Barckoy had a hard time against newcomers Kris & Joe Jugdeo who pushed them to limit before surrendering in two close sets. The match started off with Leacock/Barckoy racing off to a 3-0 lead against their inexperienced opponents, before the match became competitive. Serving down 3-4, the Jugdeos lost the chance to even the score and went on to lose the set 6-3.
In the second set, the score was even before the Jugdeos secured a break and a chance at 5- 4 to serve for the set. The top seeds then raised their game and forced a tie-break at 6-6 which they proceeded to win 7-4 and book a place in the semi-finals against top juniors Daniel Lopes/Gavin Lewis.
The tournament continues with matches in the Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles scheduled to be finished by Thursday.
