Defending joint champions Barbados and Sagicor HPC had to settle for two points each at Everest Ground yesterday after rain condemned their opening round Regional Super50 cricket match to a no-result.
Heavy showers on Tuesday afternoon and again yesterday morning left the boundary areas soggy while seepage under the covers also affected the game which eventually began 195 minutes late and was reduced to 34 overs per side.
Another shower at 13:37hrs ended the contest with HPC, invited to bat on a sluggish track, on 100-5 off 20 overs; Nkruma Bonner left unbeaten on 34 and Jason Holder on seven.
HPC which made their Regional one-day debut last year in Jamaica have only been beaten by Guyana in four matches at this level since all of their three other games, including yesterday’s match, have ended in no results.
Home boy Rajendra Chandrika (1) was taken at point off Tino Best at 20-1 while his opening partner Kyle Corbin who struck four boundaries on the slow outfield in his 27-ball 21, was soon removed by Dwayne Smith, who finished with 3-35, twenty runs later.
A small crowd which included a few Bajan visitors soon saw left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn force Devon Thomas, who never suggested permanence in his shot-filled 10, to loft a catch to Ashley Nurse at long-on as the Students who won all six games on their recent tour to Dubai, slipped to 58-3 in overcast conditions.
Smith then had fellow Barbadian Shamarh Brooks taken at slip for a first ball duck at 59-4 and although Wicket Keeper Shane Dowrich (19) and the level-headed Bonner added 25 for the sixth wicket before Dowrich, after scoring a glorious cover-driven boundary chased a wide ball and was caught behind by Patrick Browne at 85-5 in the 18th over before the rain had to final say.
When the two teams met last year, Chandrika top scored with 52 in HPC’s 154-5 off 40 overs before restricting Barbados to 27-4 off 11.3 overs when rain ended the match.
Barbados, with a record 17 trips to the finals, but with just five titles to show for their efforts, take on the Windwards, who lost to Guyana at Providence yesterday, in their next match tomorrow at Everest.
Zone ‘B’ of the eight team competition starts today with CCC playing Trinidad and Tobago at Everest in a game which was originally fixed for Bourda while defending joint champions Leeward Islands face the Chris Gayle-led Jamaicans at Providence.
The Guyana/HPC game scheduled for tomorrow at Bourda should also be switched to Providence due to the poor drainage in the City which has impeded the drying process at Bourda.
