Private schools throughout Guyana are expected to put their athletic talents to the test when the inaugural Private Schools Athletics Championships kicks off at the Ministry of Education Sports Complex Ground on Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown on October 29, 2011.
The Championship which is perceived to serve as the annual maximum culmination of athletic sports for private schools in Guyana, is intended to give students within the private education sector a true opportunity to compete amongst themselves, and by extension, give them and their school some national recognition for their athletic potential and contribution to the development of our young athletes.
The event which is the first of its kind for the private education sector, is also expected to be complimented by the guest participation of two invited group of students from Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, who are equally motivated to represent their respective private schools.
Because of logistical issues and time constraints, this year’s event would be restricted to track and field, and would see the inclusion of tape-ball cricket, and women’s circle tennis, the latter being considered an experimental approach to diversifying athletics events within the private schools sector, as it is generally alien to the athletics season for local schools.
The organisers envision that this event will be an important milestone for athletics in Guyana, and would certainly be an opportunity for local private schools to showcase their talents and impress upon their students that the element of national competitive “school sports” is equally alive and well in the private education sector too.
Organisers are currently dispatching participating invitations to various private schools throughout Guyana, and are anticipating that all of the major local private primary and secondary schools will send their respective teams to claim athletics glory.
Schools and other persons wishing to register are encouraged to call Mr. Isaacs on telephone number 231 9897, preferably during office hours or via email address – [email protected].
The Private Schools Athletics Organisation currently comprises of a three-member holding committee, until it can be transferred into a legally constituted sports body expectedly for the 2014 athletics season.
The current committee members are Mr. Nigel Threlfall, Mr. Paul Isaacs, and Mr. Julian E. Cummings, while Ms. Odella Patterson has been retained as PRO and sits as an ex-officio member.
