Gordon, Favourite and Bethune hits the spotlight
North Inter-zone Championships
Yekinni Favourite flops over the high jump bar at 192cm to claim to boy’s U-18 title.
With no competition in the long and high jumps at this year’s North Zone Champion of Champions Field Events, Neil Gordon, who registered one win at the Inter-schools Championships, was able to catalog two consecutive victories at the Guyana Teachers Union Ground, Monday.
Gordon of Chase Academy, who leaped 6.02m in the open boy’s category last week, was unable to surpass that distance, which was named his personal best for the year. Gordon jumped a distance of 6.01m, which claimed the open boy’s long jump as Juanita Hooper bounded to 4.80m to secure the first position in the girls open category.
The twins also were champs in the long jump events. Shaquan Daniels, executed what her twin, Shomaine demonstrated to her at the Inter-school field events last Thursday. Shaquan, declared what rightfully belonged to her after losing her jumps at the Inter-School Field Events. The task was done with an impressive 5.09m to win the girls U-16 long jump.
Shomaine won the under 18 jumps with 4.47m as Ruth Sanmogan was first with 4.18m in the under 14 girls class.
Daniel Haynes and Muazz Trisham took the podium with leaps of 5.77m and 5.81m to win the U-16 and U-18 boys respectively.
The High Jump saw Gordon (open), Yekinni Favourite (U-18) and Kareem Jeffery (U-16) clearing heights and taking the top positions in the jumps with distances of 200cm, 192cm and 180m.
Favourite, who was favoured for the boys U-18 Javelin was out classed by rival Lorenzo Bethune who registered a mind blowing 41.68m to claim the first spot ahead of Favourite’s 38.50m.
Joel Yaw who was absent in the boy’s open long jump was victorious in the boys Javelin. Yaw threw 38.70m as Michael Douglas’ 33.38m was second with Trevor Dellyivera 29.64m second.
The female category saw Kimberly Arthur setting the pace with 24.03m in the U-16’s. Tiffany Hercules was the runner-up with 15.45m. Khaya Williams lobbed 12.95m in the girls under 18.
The under 12 boys category was a bit competitive than usual. Umkosi Vancooten and Eon Joseph were battling it down to the bottom; however the final result showed that Vancooten was the better man. He logged a distance of 11.41m ahead of Joseph’s 11.40m.
In the U-14 boys, Brandon Stuart 24.90m was first as Ryan Amir was second with 23.68m. Natesha Seymour won the girls category with 15.72m.
After being out classed in the boy’s Javelin, Favourite returned to prove that he was worthy of qualifying for this year’s Nationals in the Field Events area. Favorite threw a distance of 28.32m in the boy’s U-18 Discus. Yaw who had registered an earlier win for the day, repeated that trend in the Open boys Discus, with Arthur following his lead to take the girls U-16 Discus with 17.17m.
Seymour 18.31m was good enough for the spot light in the girls under 14.
Almost all the girls in the Shot Putt area threw over 5m to win their category except Atia Happy who had 3.70m.
Walter Roberts threw 9.88m in the U-18 boys as Jermaine Gordon was first with 9.38m in the open category. (Juanita Hooper)
