Dear Editor,
Our thanks to Nyron Asgar Ali (in a letter published in September, 29) for highlighting both his faith in the Alliance For Change as well as his frustration with our apparent immobility with regard to getting our message out there. We understand the urgency of his concerns and assure him that we have taken them onboard.
Nyron, who informs us in the letter that he has migrated, writes – “I question myself every day why I came to America and I always find the answer in low pay, no security, victimisation, widespread corruption, and the fact that Guyana is now a society where the rich get richer and they can do anything they want with the poor. I have never written a letter to the press while I was in Guyana out of fear of the PPP. My father was scared of them, even though he knew that they were doing wrong things.”
That a young person in as crucial a field as IT has to leave this country – out of want and out of fear – underscores what the AFC has been pointing out with regard to the PPP’s treatment of our best and brightest people.
Under the Alliance For Change, our ICT development model will not be based on enormous and wasteful initiatives – like the Grove computer contract, or the 6 billion-dollar OLPF which, while stressing ICT development, does not even have a functional website, and which constitute an excuse to funnel taxpayer dollars to supporters.
In stark contrast, an AFC Government will only purchase desktop computers that are assembled in Guyana, giving priority to businesses within the respective regions.
We will revamp the OLPF initiative with the assembly of all the necessary computers, including special low-power models, being done in Guyana, many by the very young people being targeted. We see a role for people like Nyron in this.
While we recognise the conditions that underwrote Nyron’s unfortunate departure, we intend – as our action plan outlines – to engage the Diaspora in the development of whatever sector their individual qualifications can support. Further, we take heart in Nyron’s commitment to return under an AFC government and we can assure him that there will be a place for his skills once we are able to take the reins of government and steer Guyana back on the right path.
We are a growing party and while we have received tremendous support from all sectors of Guyana, electioneering remains an expensive endeavour. This would account for our seeming absence from the areas Nyron stated in his letter.
We can assure him however that our presence in Georgetown and the West Coast of Demerara will be increased in the upcoming weeks. He can also see some of the areas we have been campaigning in on our website, http://www.voteafc.com/, under the tab Alliance on The Move.
We would like to invite Nyron to help us to improve our online coordination by visiting our website, joining our Facebook group and page and helping us to get our message out to all of Guyana.
Again, we want to thank him for his support and encourage him to continue to call us out whenever he feels we are not performing to the standard he expects of us.
