A Den Amstel man became the country’s latest industrial accident fatality when he was crushed to death by a 320-pound steel rod, while working at a location in Buck Hall.
According to reports 25-year-old Kelvin Jordan, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Leonora Cottage Hospital around 20:30 hours on Saturday, hours after a steel pile which himself and four other men were lifting, fell on him.
The man’s grandmother, Thelma Jordan, told this publication that she last saw her grandson on Friday evening when he indicated to her that he was going to an interior location.
“After he tell me, I didn’t believe that it would be so soon…and later in the day we get a message that he got into an accident.”
Mrs. Jordan said that the man with whom her grandson worked said that a steel pile crushed him.
“He visited us and he told us that Kelvin and three other persons were fetching this iron pile to the spot where they had to drill and like he (Kelvin) slip and the thing fall on he and it was too heavy for the other boys.”
The woman said that she received a telephone call saying that she should visit the Leonora Cottage Hospital.
According to Jordan, her grandson’s employer has since visited her home and indicated his willingness to assist with funeral expenses.
Meanwhile another relatives told this publication that the post mortem has since revealed that Jordan died as a result of a fractured skull and injuries to his stomach.
The matter has since been reported to the police. However, relatives say they were not sure if the matter was reported to the Ministry.
This is believed to be the second reported industrial accident in the Buck Hall area in recent times.
On August 30 last year Jason Fraser was working the wood chipper machine when he disappeared.
His remains were found in the bottom of the machine after a security official at the plant reported smelling a foul odour from the wood chipper machine, four days after the man’s disappearance.
