A large contingent of cyclists graced the starting line at the junction of the Rupert Craig Highway and the University of Guyana Access Road, and led by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony and his Permanent Secretary, Alfred King, completed an approximate 10K journey up to the Carifesta Sports Complex when the 3rd edition of the ‘Big Ride’ exercise concluded yesterday afternoon.
Staged Under the theme ‘Ride on, live long’, the event which attracted cyclists from several East Coast villages as well as those from the Guyana Cycling Federation was organized to create an awareness of physical exercise as a means to curtail the high incidences of diseases.
Shortly after the completion of the event, Minister Anthony expressed delight at the large turnout even as he reiterated the importance of exercise. He also urged the cyclists to continue engaging in daily exercises in order to procure the benefits.
Mr. King complimented the group on their discipline while reminding them that activity of that nature curtailed the heavy health expenditure. President of the Guyana Cycling Federation, Cheryl Thompson also congratulated the cyclists and hinted that her organization is currently mulling a similar event sometime next year. She said that she is optimistic that that event would be similarly supported.
Meanwhile, East Coast village Industry, received prizes for fielding the largest contingent as well as the best uniformed unit. Montrose primary School was adjudged the largest youth group, while 4 years old, John Niles received a special prize for being the youngest participating rider. Maurice Fagundes and Mr. Miller, both 69 years old, shared the prize for the oldest participant, while Plaisance resident, Derek Das who rode one of those carrier cycles used by bakers long ago, complete with number plates, received the prize for the most innovative machine. Two lucky persons also won cycles after their numbers were pulled from among many others in a bag.
