Under the theme “One Caribbean – Seeing the Future Through the Eyes of Our Youth” Guyana observed Caribbean Youth Day, yesterday.
The Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Centre in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the Ministry of Education hosted a Financial Literacy Workshop for Schools, yesterday at the Regency Suites in Hadfield Street.
According to the Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Centre (CYPCC), the purpose of the Youth-led Workshop is two-fold. The students were given an opportunity to share their views about Caribbean Youth Day.
Through a series of fun and interactive activities the workshop sought to enhance the Financial Literacy skills of the participants as the constantly changing dynamics of the world economy has severely impacted everyone, especially youth.
Some 40 secondary and post-secondary school students, between the ages of 14 and 19 were given an opportunity to share their views on Caribbean Youth Day, its 2011 Theme and what their youth development priorities are.
It seeks to enhance the Financial Literacy skills of the participants. Financial Literacy is an ideal thematic focus as the constantly changing dynamics of the world economy has severely impacted everyone, especially youth.
Young people can benefit enormously from being financially literate. Through a series of fun and interactive activities, which reflect everyday financial decisions, this workshop will help students to understand the power of money and the benefits that can be derived from saving, banking and being aware of one’s financial goals and habits (both good and bad).
At the conclusion of this workshop students should have a renewed sense of financial confidence and basic knowledge of financial literacy.
Caribbean Youth Day is dedicated to commemorate the significant strides youth have taken towards securing their own empowerment and development as well as their contributions to national growth and development.
