Dear Editor,
It is with great privilege and high hopes that I finally decided to express my humble opinion on some of the major issues which I think will affect Guyana significantly in the future and if I am not wrong it already has.
Frankly speaking, Guyana has a lot of “illiterates” and the government needs to do something about this as soon as possible.
What gave me the courage to speak about this situation is the area I am now acquainted with. The villagers in my community feel that it’s not necessary to educate the girls in their family since they believe that a girl’s future lies at her husband’s house and she therefore has to do what her spouse wants her to do.
As for the boys, they are sent to school up to a specific age, probably fifteen years, then they leave school and look for jobs such as, Mechanics, cane cutters, etc.
To avoid having a lot of illiterates in this country, the government should enforce strict laws governing the attendance of students in each school, so a child at no time would decide on his own that he wants to “quit,” in fact it should be teachers’ choice Name withheld
