UWI to offer 30 scholarships to athletes
The University of the West Indies Sports Department is expected to announce 30 new scholarship recipients, giving more student athletes access to top-class training facilities as well as opportunities for learning professional sports in Jamaica.
Scholarship athletes in the UWI programme will now be increased to 70, as the UWI seeks to become the key learning centre for both mind and body in the Caribbean.
Former West Indies Test player and captain of Jamaica’s Caribbean Twenty20 team Wavell Hinds, who is also a director of the Jamaica Cricket Association and vice-president of the West Indies Players Association, will be one of the main recipients of the scholarship programme.
An inaugural sports media brunch at the Mona Visitors Lodge next week Tuesday will introduce the recipients, with pro-vice chancellor and principal professor Gordon Shirley to officially welcome the new athletes and outline the aims and programmes of the university in the area of sports. UWI Sports will also highlight the achievements of the past academic year by the student athletes with head coaches, faculty heads and officials of major sporting associations expected to attend.
Apart from Hinds, who is studying media and communications, Gillene Graham of netball, Peter Matthews who participated at the recent World University Games, and footballer Leighton Donaldson will also be named among the recipients of athletic scholarships.
