Guyana’s President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday met with stakeholders in Guyana’s cricket and a follow-up meeting is scheduled for the near future but their have been no official comment from any of the parties involved.
The Government had proposed to set up an IMC to run the affairs of Guyana’s Cricket after an injunction filed by a member of the Berbice Cricket Board was dismissed by the High Court.
It is understood that while a committee will be formed to oversee the running of the cricket, the GCB will be the body organising Guyana’s cricket affairs until the next elections are held.
It is also understood that a five-point plan to move Guyana’s cricket forward will be addressed at the next meeting and the amending of the GCB constitution is expected to be a critical discussion topic.
The Government has also reportedly proposed the granting of Government funding for cricket for a five-year period as proper systems are put in place to improve the administration of Guyana’s national sport with the Government playing a supporting role.
The WICB had asked the Government to send them official correspondence on what role the Government plan to play in Guyana’s cricket since Governments involvement in cricket among member boards is not encouraged by the ICC and WICB.
According to the WICB, the Guyana Government is yet to respond to their request after its President Julian Hunte met with the Guyana Head-of-State in Guyana.
The WICB has disclosed that the matter involving Guyana’s cricket and the proposed IMC being implemented is expected to come up for discussion at an ICC meeting in London on September 12.
The GCB will hold a press conference today to discuss the upcoming t20 matches this weekend in Guyana between the West Indies and Pakistan female teams.
