A letter published in the September 1, 2011 edition of Kaieteur News and captioned “I can see a man reduced to shambles as he tries to provide answers” was published in error. Indeed, the letter is premised on an ongoing legal issue and draws conclusions that the court is being asked to determine.
The writer has taken a position that makes the same accusations that have the court trying to determine whether prior allegations were justified. Indeed, the defence counsel tried very hard to limit the news coverage emanating from the hearing. He had cited bias and selective reporting to the extent that he has asked the court to curtail such reporting.
It is against this background that the letter written by Aubrey Retemyer must be seen as being inimical to the interest of justice. Its publication also places this paper in the most invidious position of having to apologise for its publication.
We regret the lapse that allowed its publication and we offer an unqualified apology to the judicial system, to Justice Brassington Reynolds, to the litigating team being led by Attorney Anil Nandlall, and to the defence team of Attorneys Nigel Hughes, Khemraj Ramjattan and Christopher Ram.
The publication was in no way intended to influence the courts and once more, we regret its publication.
