The demolition of the historical St. Barnabas Church that was located at Regent Street & Orange Walk, is now complete. Several weeks ago the imposing edifice was sold.
The building, believed to have formed a significant part of Guyana’s heritage and legacy, was advertised for sale by the Incorporated Trustee of the Anglican Church. The dwindling congregation and vagrants, who took over the compound and used it as their washrooms, were among the reasons for the sale of the structure.
The demolition of the church took several weeks.
On July 17, last, members of the congregation were saddened as they held their deconsecration service. The service was presided over by Reverend Cornell Jerome Moss S.T.M, the Lord Bishop of Guyana.
The St. Barnabas church was situated next to two other significant landmarks in the Bourda District, namely the Bourda Cemetery and the Bourda Market. According to the National Trust of Guyana, the church was erected in 1884 for the purpose of worship at the Bourda District.
