-urges all concerned to take advantage of the assistance offered
Lennie Shuffler, President of the GVF recently returned home after attending the 65th CSV Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil which was held from August 8-10.
Shuffler when contacted by Kaieteur Sport reported that it was the best Congress he had ever attended since taking the reins of the Guyana Volleyball Federation and gave reasons for his pronouncement.
According to Shuffler, he was able to hold high level discussions with a number of influential officials of the Body and was promised assistance wherever possible should he request it.
He reported that FIVB President Wei Jizhong made a very clear statement regarding the direction that the international body was taking which included the further development of Continental and National Federations with 80 percent of revenue earned going towards development programmes.
He added that the GVF has already received approval for a four-year Nationwide Schools Programme and is now awaiting the arrival of equipment.
Approval was given by FIVB and CSV for a Taraflex sports floor from a leading sports floor manufacturer Gerflor to be sent to the GVF and this will be done in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission where it will be placed at the National Gymnasium.
Shuffler said that the discussions have been ongoing with the relevant local bodies to have the floor installed and this development was greatly appreciated by FIVB, CSV and GVF. He further mentioned that a FIVB Teachers Volleyball Coaching Course is scheduled to be conducted from September 5-9, while he did manage to solicit the support of Brazil to be “BIG BROTHER” to GVF and a project document will be sent to CSV and Brazil President Dr Ary Graca shortly.
Meanwhile, meetings with the Presidents of the volleyball federations of the states of Roraima and Amapa are being arranged to push this relationship forward thereby supporting the ‘Bloc Development Plan’ which presently involves Cayenne, Suriname and Guyana.
Shuffler informed that conversations with FIVB President Wei Jizhong, CSV President Dr Ary Graca and NORCECA President Marty Hofiz were also conducted and they all expressed willingness to help wherever possible.
While in Rio, he was also able to witness the semi finals and final of the Men’s Junior World Volleyball Championships where Russia defeated Argentina in the final 3-2.
“The extra time at the Congress provided the opportunity to exchange views with other CSV Presidents and to explain GVF challenges, while several chats with the Head of
FIVB Rules of the Games Commission were very informative,” Shuffler stated.
He said he will now urge all members of the GVF, affiliated associations, clubs, players, officials and all interested in the development of volleyball in Guyana to take advantage of the opportunities now being offered by FIVB and CSV and further supported by NORCECA for our development and to ensure that they work hard to justify the investment being offered in the sport in Guyana.
He extended congratulations to CSV President Dr Ary Graca. Marcelo Wangler, Mauricio Levy and the organizers of the Congress for a job well done.
