A smattering of spectators were treated to several exciting matches when action in the Georgetown Cricket Association/DeSinco U-13 cricket tournament got underway at three venues along Woolford Avenue, yesterday morning.
Over at the Gandhi Youth Organization (GYO) ground, the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) defeated the Gandhi Youth Organization ‘A’ team by 150 runs to start their march for championship honours, while over at the GNIC ground Malteenoes defeated Everest. In the final match played yesterday, the GYO ‘B’ team suffered a similar fate as the ‘A’ Team counterparts losing to the Georgetown Cricket Club.
The matches were played over a 25 overs span but the rules and applications differed vastly from regular cricket matches. Both teams started on two hundred runs and every batsman was allowed to bat for a maximum of 5 overs. For every wicket that falls, the team loses 10 runs. At the end of the allotted overs the accumulate runs of the team is added to those remaining from the initial 200. The team batting second does so for a similar number of overs, and an eventual tally determines the winner.
The DCC called correctly and took first strike and when the calculations were completed amassed 260-11. The GYO ‘A’ could only score 150 after losing 16 wickets thus conceding by 150 runs. Sagar Ataramandi (21*) was the only batsman to reach double figures and he did it without losing his wicket. Bowling for the winners, Clevon McEwan sent down 3 overs and snared 5 wickets for 5 runs.
Over at the GNIC ground, Malteenoes called correctly and took first strike. In all, 19 wickets fell reducing their final total to 137. Everest then took control, notching up 254-10 to win by 117 runs. Kishan Bhola bowled 3 overs while conceding 21 runs and taking 3 wickets for the winners. Bowling for the losers, Colin Barlow finished with figures of 3 overs and a similar amount of wickets. He also conceded 21 runs.
The GYO ‘B’ team also suffered a similar fate as their ‘A’ team and lost to the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) by a mammoth 216 runs. The GYO ‘B’ took first strike and lost 26 wickets with merely 86 runs on the board. Reeaz Mohamed scored 16 of those runs which represented the top score.
The GCC then turned in a masterful performance, scoring 302-5. Renaldo Ali Mohamed (39) scored the most runs for his team but was dismissed once. Samuel McKenzie (28) lashed the next best total.
At the end of the matches the youngsters were lectured on issues relating to proper social decorum among others. The facilitators were former West Indies off spinner Roger Harper and Ms Joan Kendall.
Six teams are vying for honours including the Gandhi Youth Organization A and B, the Georgetown Cricket Club, Malteenoes Cricket Club, Everest Cricket Club and the Demerara Cricket Club. The action continues this morning at the same venues.
