Dear Editor,
This brief bit of information is for the benefit of all decent and upright Guyanese irrespective of race, colour, creed or political persuasion. It is to demonstrate that on the deck of our National Ship, we have a Captain steering our ship of State into a murky whirlpool of impropriety, pettiness and arrogance.
At the Press Conference I hosted on Tuesday, in response to a question from a reporter, I said that, in spite of the past, I was optimistic that the new Minister of Local Government would bring something new to our relationship. But yesterday, August 10, the Town Clerk received a message from the office of the Minister of Local Government that the President has summoned a meeting for 1:00pm, with the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown to discuss Municipal matters.
In spite of the way the Council is made up, and in spite of the proprieties and protocol, instructions were given that the President would meet with the Town Clerk, the City Treasurer, the City Engineer and the Deputy Mayor. This letter was being dictated as the meeting was taking place with the above persons.
Some people fail to realize that when they introduce and encourage the violations of convention and time honoured rules of engagement, we open the flood gates to lawlessness and anarchy.
This behaviour must be seen in the context of State-controlled Radio, and most of the Media, where as in the case of Channel 6, if you dare to speak out, you must be punished and ignored by our new imperial Over Lord.
This can no longer be treated as a personal issue, for it demonstrates our steady drift towards a dictatorship. I cannot speak for the Deputy Mayor, or others who either cringe, out of fear, or are manipulated by inducements of one kind or another.
I, like others, would stand up for what is right and most of all, the Truth. Our Commander in Chief should learn from the lessons of history, including recent events in the Middle East, and most recently in Chile and London.
The struggle for justice continues, and in spite of the dangers and challenges, I ask all patriots to neither surrender, nor submit.
Fortunately, I know members of the PPP/C Government are themselves expressing grave concerns about the authoritarian hand now on the Captain’s deck of the Ship of Guyana. Hamilton Green, J.P.
