Modern Urological Care at GPHC through HoLEP Surgical Training

Patients diagnosed with an enlarged prostate will soon benefit from advanced minimally invasive procedures such as Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate, commonly known as HoLEP, as the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation continues to strengthen surgical training and capacity in this area.

HoLEP is a modern surgical technique used to treat an enlarged prostate. Some of its key advantages include less bleeding, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and effective long-term relief of urinary symptoms.

While HoLEP is not yet a routine service at GPHC, this training represents an important step toward making the procedure available in the future. By building the skills and experience of local urological surgeons and trainees, GPHC continues to advance access to modern, high-quality surgical care for patients in Guyana.

To support this advancement, the Urology Section of the Department of Surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation recently hosted a HoLEP surgical workshop, led by Dr. David Bayne, Chief of Urology at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

Dr. Bayne is an American Board of Urology-certified urologist with a strong interest in international surgery. GPHC is also proud to recognize his Guyanese heritage, making this collaboration meaningful.

During the hands-on workshop, local urological surgeons and trainees gained valuable exposure and practical experience in HoLEP, further strengthening their skills in advanced prostate surgery.
