Danny Van Nooten was yesterday charged with discharging a loaded firearm and granted bail to the tune of $250,000 by Magistrate Hazel Octave Hamilton, when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Van Nooten, 40, is that on July 21, at Tiger Creek Backdam, Mahdia, he discharged a loaded firearm at Colin Broomes with the intent to main, disfigure, disable or cause grievous bodily harm upon him.
The accused, who resides at Tiger Creek, St. Lucia Hill, Mahdia, was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Attorney at Law James Bond, who represented the accused, made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that he posed no risk of flight and that he does not own a firearm, legal or illegal.
The attorney also told the court that Van Nooten is the owner of a mining operation.
No facts of what transpired on the day in question were presented to the court.
The Prosecution had no objection to the accused being granted bail, but requested that it be a substantial sum, considering the seriousness of the offence.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar also made an application for the matter to be transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
Bail was granted and the matter was set for October 19 at Mahdia.
