Four West Indies players in Berbice team
Permaul, Foo also included for Jam Zone Masters’ Cup t20
Four players with senior West Indies team experience have been included in the Universal DVD Berbice Titans team which will oppose Hits and Jams Super Stars in the first semi-final of the Jam Zone Masters’ Cup t20 cricket competition on August 12 at the Guyana National Stadium.
A lot will depend on leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo to remove Chris Gayle in the contest that starts at 17:00hrs as both teams vie for a place in the final on August 14 from 21:00hrs at Providence.
An anticipated capacity crowd could be in for a treat as the genuinely quick Brandon Bess, who made his Test debut against South Africa last year in Barbados, runs in to Gayle with the new ball.
Apart from Bishoo and Bess, Narsingh Deonarine (who turns 28 two days after the Masters Cup final) and Royston Crandon are the other players in the Berbice side who have represented the West Indies senior team.
Deonarine played the first of his eight Tests against South Africa in 2005 and has also played 20 ODIs. The left-hander will be remembered for his million dollar six off Samuel Badree when Guyana beat T&T in the final over of their 2006 Stanford t20 final in Antigua.
The 28-year-old Crandon played his only ODI against India in 2009 in South Africa, while also in the Berbice team is Guyana t20 players Jonathon Foo and Richard Ramdeen.
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, who is now at the HPC in Barbados and widely regarded as someone who could be Guyana’s next West Indies player, is also in the side which will be captained by West Indies ‘A’ team left-hander Assad Fudadin.
Each team in the four-team competition is allowed four overseas Internationals but Berbice, Guyana’s defending t20 champions have opted to use only ‘home grown’ players.
Berbice and Hits and Jams Super Stars face-off in the opening match before New Line Cavaliers and Georgetown Pitbulls square off in the second semi-final on the same day from 21:00hrs.
