Hosts Ash Educational Institute produced a riveting performance to capture the final of the Region 5 segment of the inaugural Digicel-sponsored Nationwide Schools Football Tournament on Thursday after inflicting a crushing 4-1 defeat over Fort Wellington Secondary.
The match played at the No.5 ground West Coast Berbice before a fair-sized crowd saw the homesters take the lead as early as the fourth minute through Raynell Frank, who eluded two defenders prior to hammering a powerful right-footer past a hapless Lester Cummings stationed on the near post.
The clinical finish evoked rapturous applause from the predominant Ash Educational Institute supporters.
Undaunted by the early setback, Fort Wellington created a few chances, but poor finishing kept the contest in favour of Ash Educational Institute.
However, Teon McAlmon reached on to the end of a pass squared across the goal and gleefully accepted it, hitting a shot from the side of his right foot into the back of the nets.
After that, both teams muffed numerous opportunities to take the ascendancy, but once again wayward finishing was the order of the day and the half came with the scores level at 1-1. On the resumption, buoyed by the vociferous home support, Ash Educational Institute regained the lead when the effervescent Marvis Sibdhannie, who had been creating havoc with the opposition defence, found himself unmarked in the penalty area and lashed home from close range.
Sibdhannie was once again lucky to be in the path of a partial save from goalkeeper Cummings from a fiercely struck shot off the boots of King Archer and he nonchalantly disposed of t into the back of the goal to give Ash Educational Institute a handy 3-1 lead deep in the second period.
By this time it was one way traffic with the home team looking hungrier by the minute, while the visitors defence begun to look tired.
The hard working Archer, who had squandered quite a few chances to score finally was rewarded when he dribbled past two defenders, before squeezing a shot from the tightest of angles past the outstretched hands of Cummings to hammer the final nail in the coffin.
The final whistle came with no addition to the scoreline and signalled a deserved victory for Ash Educational Institute.
Digicel’s Representative Delon Peters presented the victorious captain Wesley McDonald with the winning trophy and medals, while he also handed over medals to the losing side.
Earlier, Peters spoke of the importance of discipline, while urging the players to display the attribute both on and off the field.
He added that in order for Digicel to feel encouraged about continuing the sponsorship, the tournament will have to be played in accordance with the rules and regulations that govern the sport. Ash Educational Institute now awaits the winner of Region 7.
