Berbice cricketers benefit as GKRS enforces partnership with RHTYSC

Six cricketers from the ancient town of Berbice have benefited from corporate chivalry following a decision taken by the management of Grace Kennedy Remittance Services/Western Union (GKRSWU) to support the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) Junior Cricket Ambassador Programme, now in its third year since inauguration.
Marketing Manager of GKRSWU, Nateeah King-Mendonca, organized a simple presentation ceremony in her organization’s boardroom where she handed over the package to RHTYSC Secretary, Hilbert Foster while lauding his efforts towards the development of young cricketers of the club. She also urged the recipients to make maximum use of the gift. She likened the occasion to that of ‘Kodak moments’ that are only captured when one is prepared to take the shot. “Ever since 2009 Western Union has been presenting such moments to young cricketers of RHTYSC by offering support in education and sports,” reminded Ms King-Mendonca. She further urged the young cricketers to make maximum use of the gift.
Ms King-Mendonca next offered some timely advice to the youths, “In life, some succeed because they are destined to do so while others succeed because they are determined to do so. Whichever is your case, always be proud of your achievements and route and be cognizant of the fact that Western Union was a part of the journey with you.”
She also lauded their dedication and commitment to the game over the years, the core variable for her company’s sustained support. “Western Union is very pleased to be associated with RHTYSC and wish you every success in your cricketing and educational careers and we trust that our assistance inspires you to achieve your goals and live a fulfilling life,” she concluded.
Secretary of the RHTYSC, Hilbert Foster expressed gratitude for the support rendered by GKRSWU while lamenting the standard of the game locally. However, Mr. Foster noted that amidst the many problems besetting the sport, there has been remarkable development in the Ancient County especially at the youth level.
Indeed, Berbicians have benefited immensely from the initiative and since its inauguration several cricketers have shown immense improvement. Among those to benefit are Lloydel Lewis, Shawn Pereira, Gudakesh Motie and Linden Austin.
Motie and Pereira went on to represent Guyana while Lewis and Austin advanced to the Inter-county level and represented Berbice.
Foster further lauded the achievements of the latter two cricketers and said, “Pereira and Motie shared 17 of the 20 wickets to fall when Berbice defeated Essequibo in their Guyana Cricket Board/GTM Under-19 Inter-county match last week.”
He also noted that this year, the RHTYSC has spotted another promising player, left arm spinner and all rounder, Kumar Madray.
He also said that his club is determined to play a major role in the restoration of cricket in Guyana and strongly believes that this can be achieved when all stakeholders contribute to the effort.
He concluded with timely advice for the young cricketers, “I would like to urge you to stay focused and drug free while retaining a high level of discipline and focus.”
He also implored them to adopt a drug free disposition while inculcating healthy reading and research habits.”
Pereira, Lewis and Madray play for the RHTYSC while Austin is a member of Young Warriors Cricket Club. Motie belongs to the Albion Sports Club.
Each player received several pieces of gear totaling over $300,000 including cricket bags, batting gloves and pads, traveling bags, helmets and a pair of uniform, each.
