Christopher Smith, the man who jumped in a trench only to be arrested by some Presidential Guards, will rest in jail for 18 months.
He was charged with robbery and appeared on Friday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Smith, on June 16, last, in the Botanical Gardens, was armed with an offensive weapon when he robbed Tasha Persaud of articles valued at $82,500.
The 20-year-old defendant appeared to be very remorseful as he pleaded guilty to the charge when read.
Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunte stated that on the day in question, about 10:45 hours the complainant and her boyfriend were seated in the Botanical Gardens when the defendant approached them with a broken bottle and demanded the articles.
The couple resisted but Smith snatched the bag containing the valuables out of Persaud’s hand and made good his escape.
Hunte stated that the young couple raised an alarm which caught the attention of the ranks on patrol duty. The ranks chased after the accused.
The court was told the defendant was apprehended in a trench. A search was carried out on his person and the articles were retrieved.
When Smith was questioned by the Magistrate as to why he committed such an act, he replied “I was hungry and I didn’t have anything to eat. I don’t have anybody; both my mother and father dead. I didn’t mean to do it, I’m sorry”.
Smith was subsequently sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.
