Dear Editor,
As I am presently visiting California, USA for a week, and moving all around, from San Diego to Los Angeles in Southern California, I have made a few notes which I would like to share with your readers.
As I move around, driving around on absolutely beautiful roads, one cannot help but marvel at how connected each community is to each other through the road network Californians possesses and maintains to very high standards; are the people in charge of Guyana doing the same?
When I use the electricity or water in California, the excellent service is apparent and taken for granted by all the people living here and is pretty inexpensive in relation to the costs in Guyana and there’s no blackouts, high or low voltage and the water out of the tap is clear and constant at 35 psi; are the people in charge of Guyana doing the same?
Mr. Editor, as you go into stores or restaurants in California, the service is excellent with the employees respectful and helpful and most of all, service is fast so you’re not kept waiting too long; are the private businesses in Guyana providing the same?
As one drives down streets here, other drivers are patient and courteous and obey all the traffic laws with strict police presence and enforcement; are the drivers in Guyana doing the same, with good policing in force by the authorities? In moving around the general area where I am visiting, one cannot help but notice the cleanliness and neatness of the environment and there is no waste or garbage visible anywhere; can the rulers of Guyana say the same for our country?
Mr. Editor, when one goes to a auto dealership here in California, cars are very affordable because the government taxes amount to under 20% and car loans are very low, sometimes with no money down; can the politicians in Guyana provide us the same?
Mr. Editor, I visited the library of the law school where my daughter graduated and can’t get over the quantity of up-to-date books available to the students and I can’t even begin to describe how beautiful the campus is; can the rulers of our country say the same for our only law school and UG campus?
I visited the San Diego zoo and the facilities and the way the animals are housed and viewed by the public is simply amazing and a joy to behold, with attendants taking care of the animals in very special ways that showed their training and care for all the animals; can the same be said of our zoo and the people who care for our animals – all the responsibility of this government?
Mr. Editor, the answer to all the questions above is an emphatic no but let me qualify my comments because some might say that Joey is comparing rich America with poor Guyana and that such a comparison is stupid. The things I talked about can be accomplished anywhere once the proper mind-set is securely set in the minds of those who lead our country and money is spent sensibly; that is why the leaders of this country need to set priorities correctly and stop, as President Cheddi said, ‘squandermania’ , corruption and mismanagement.
Mr. Editor, you can go almost anywhere in the USA and observe the same things I am seeing as I travel around Southern California and the reason things are as orderly, clean and affordable is because of good governance with vision based on a serious practicality for the citizens who live in any part of America. Can we say the same about our leaders who should at least give us decent governance?
