Braithwaite is fifth youngest West Indian to play Test cricket

West Indies under-19 Captain Kraigg Brathwaite yesterday became the fifth youngest West Indian to play Test cricket when he made his debut in the 2nd Digicel Test against Pakistan yesterday at Warner Park.
The right hander, who turned 18 in December, joins fellow Barbadians Derek Sealy (17 years, 122 days), Garfield Sobers (17 years, 245 days) and Robin Bynoe (18 years, 31 days) on the list of West Indian teenagers to make their Test debuts.
Trinidadian Jeffrey Stollmeyer (18 years, 90 days) is the only other player to make his West Indies Test debut when younger than Braithwaite who was 18 years 169 days yesterday.
Braithwaite who has two centuries and averages 39.08 from 16 First Class matches, still attends Combermere College the same school that Sealy attended when he was called up for his first Test and his school yesterday pledged US$5 for each run he scored in his first innings at this level.
“This is an honour for me and a real dream. I always wanted to play for the West Indies in Test match. I never thought it would come this early but I’m delighted to be playing my first Test match,” Brathwaite said.
His father was in St Kitts yesterday and Braithwaite explained that it was not his dream, but the dream of his father.
“This is also the dream of all my family and many, many people who have supported me my entire life. My aim is to do everyone proud.” Braithwaite, who scored 169 not out and 46 against Young Australia in the solitary under-19 Test match last month in his last competitive match.
“Kraigg is a very dedicated young man. From the time he was a little boy making centuries at primary school I could see he had the ability to do well. There was no way of knowing he would play for the West Indies, but I’m happy that he made it. I’m very happy for him. I just want him to continue to improve. He’s doing what he loves,” his father Arleigh proudly exclaimed.
