The Linden to Lethem Road will undergo further maintenance works as three contracts totaling approximately $193M were recently awarded to carry out works on the 265-mile of roadway.
The maintenance works, which will commence on May 15, have been divided into three lots. Mekdeci Machinery and Construction Inc (MMC) has been awarded contracts valuing $48M and $52M to execute maintenance works on lots one and two—a distance of 130 miles.
Lot One is from Mabura junction to 48 Miles while Lot two is from 48 Miles to Kurupukari.
BK International will be executing maintenance works to 135 miles of roadway at a cost of $93M under lot three. This work will stretch from Kurupukari to Lethem.
Neim Mohamed, Hinterland Engineer of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications, said that the scope of works includes the grading and shaping of roadway and raising of earthen embankment.
He noted that the duration of the contracts is six months but the contractors are required to be mobilized on site for a period of one year. This is to satisfy the defects liability period.
Mohamed said that the Ministry is hoping for good weather conditions so that works will be on schedule.
The Linden to Lethem road is susceptible to heavy rainfall and last year owing to continuous rainfall, culverts in certain sections caved in while other sections experienced severe flooding.
The Ministry has expended approximately $100M within the past year to carry out maintenance works along the roadway.
