(sitting) GT&T CEO Yog Mahadeo (fourth left) and Sport Minister Dr. Frank Anthony (on his immediate left) along with organising committee members and sponsors pose with the two winning teams last evening at Regency Suites Hotel.
It was another ample demonstration of its growing confidence and marketing strategy, GT&T, organisers of this year’s 10/10 Softball Cricket Competition produced a lustrous presentation ceremony to reward the winners of the event last evening, at the Regency Suites Hotel on Hadfield Street.
Attended by CEO Yog Mahadeo, Sport Minister Frank Anthony, sponsors representatives, members of the Organising Committee, participants and well wishers, the occasion was befitting a tournament that demonstrated a high class which culminated with a final that saw one of the biggest crowds to witness a cricket competition, at the National Stadium.
Dr Anthony in his remarks said that softball cricket is here to stay and challenged the Organisers to not only aim for 1500 teams as was reported in the media, but rather raise the bar to accommodate around 2,000 teams in next year’s edition.
He added that the mere fact that this year’s competition attracted some 1224 teams shows that the popularity of this format of the game is growing steadily and is embraced by all, while it also helps to break down the perceived barriers of racial strife.
He pointed out that the power of sport could build social cohesion and creates more space and avenues to bring people together.
Mahadeo in his presentation accepted the challenge of the Minister and urged the Organising Committee to ensure that it could rise to the challenge and make the tournament even larger.
He stated that GT&T’s new vision is to work with the Government and the country’s leaders to build a new vision for Guyana.
The winning men’s team Wolf Warriors received $2million, while Berbice All Stars took home $1million.
The full report will come in the next issue.
