Police at the Vigilance Police Station are holding a man who is believed to be one of two bandits who robbed visiting overseas couple Loretta Mathura and her husband Kadir, last Friday.
The man was arrested by members of the Lusignan Central Community Policing Group on Saturday night after he was reportedly recognized by the victims at a wedding house in Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
On Friday the Mathuras had just returned from overseas after almost 20 years to attend a relative’s wedding, when they were attacked by two armed men.
The men relieved them of cash and other valuables and made god their escape.
It is suspected that the robbers brazenly turned up at the same wedding that the victims were attending and were promptly spotted.
Members of the Lusignan Community Policing Group were who were patrolling in the area, were alerted and they managed to apprehend one of the suspects while his accomplice fled in a taxi.
The arrested suspect is expected to be placed on an identification parade today before charges can be instituted, while the hunt continues for his alleged accomplice.
