Four days of intense lectures on the intricacies of coaching and other officiating matters concluded yesterday afternoon when 16 participants received certificates that signifies their status as coaches affiliated to the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) with opportunities to climb further up the ladder into the realms of the coaching panel of the International Amateur boxing Association (AIBA).
Participants were schooled in the art of coaching and were exposed to lectures and practical sessions from specialists which included Dr Max, Hanoman and Orthopedic specialist, Foster Jeffrey among others.
Under the guidance of Terrence Poole, a Hungary trained coach, with assistance from Carl Franklyn and Lennox Daniels, two level two AIBA coaches, the new coaches were taught a plethora of theoretical and practical issues and were assured that once they inculcate the lessons, would serve them and the local association well.
The closing ceremony took place yesterday at the National Gymnasium, the venue for the lectures, and was attended by president of GABA, Steve Ninvalle, Vice Presidents, Eustace Cuffy, Maurice Rajkumar and Jeff Roberts, Public Relations Officer, Shawn Richmond, Treasurer, Dexter Patterson and Assistant Secretary Treasurer, Keith Campbell.
Meanwhile, Ninvalle expressed gratitude to Mr. Poole even as he assured the successful coaches that the course was the first of many other planned initiatives aimed towards their development. He urged the new coaches to live harmoniously while sharing their knowledge and ideas among themselves. The GABA President further hinted at an impending course under the auspices of the world boxing body. “Congratulations for a great job; GABA is forever indebted to you,” Ninvalle told Mr. Poole.
Mr. Richmond noted that GABA is making huge strides towards the development of the sport but hinted that an evaluation process can only be conducted in the passage of time. He said that he is confident that the course would serve to widen the perspectives of the new coaches.
Mr. Cuffy and Mr. Roberts both added their voices in encouragement to the new coaches and urged them to give of their best. Subsequently, the coaches were issued with their respective certificates. Dr Max Hanoman was presented with a certificate of acknowledgement while Dr Jeffrey, who was not in attendance, will receive a similar accolade later.
