Dear Editor,
Reading your article captioned “First Ever Women’s Expo”, (Kaieteur News 14/4/2011) I would like to state for the history and record that it is not the first. In August 1996 the Ministry of Human Services & Social Security organised a week of exhibition dubbed “Exposition of Women Art & Craft” at the Sophia Exhibition Centre. It showcased cultural events every night, food, art, craft and other creative expressions.
I also recalled that it was held during the same time when a meeting of the Ministers of the CARICOM States was held in Guyana. The ministers participated in this event and expressed surprise at the quality and beautiful type of work exhibited.
Women from all parts of Guyana and from all walks of life spend one week working together. It was a truly wonderful experience watching women take pride in their work. Ms Bibi Andrews who was a member of HIDA and Co-ordinator of the Rural Women’s Network brought out quite a large contingent of Amerindian groups from all over the country.
It was the first time my husband agreed to put his paintings on show even though he was a known artist. That show gave a lot of single mothers the opportunity to start their own business and Guyana craft was known around the Caribbean for our unique style and design.
I wish success to those who are taking part in this second experience; I know they will never forget it.
