Dear Editor,
The Government’s acceptance of a monetary gift from the Chinese Company from which it is sourcing computers was in bad taste, to put it mildly.
I refuse to enter into a discussion about it because it does not smack of good governance, transparency and ethics. I will, instead, relate the story of what former President Desmond Hoyte did when someone gave a gift to a state organisation.
The year I cannot remember, but the Forestry Commission had to relate to a foreign organisation whose representative constantly visited Guyana. However, there was always a constant problem with vehicle and efficient transporting of the representative. His organisation donated a car to the Commission that accepted it and put it into use. When the matter got to President Hoyte’s desk, he called a meeting of the then Commissioner and others and promptly sent the car away. His words, “This Government does not accept gifts”, can be heard reverberating across Guyana at this time when the present government is all about gifts. I wish that someone intimately involved with this matter shed more light.
