Sheriff, Customs Racing Stables take top honours
Fairy Landing of the Sheriff Racing Stable of West Berbice negotiated the conditions successfully and landed safely to take top honours in the feature B class event when the Kennard Memorial Turf Club successfully held the annual one day Phagwah horserace meet at the club’s entity Bush Lot Farm Corentyne on Sunday.
Despite being in the mist of the rainy season the authorities were able to bring off an incident free day of racing in front of a fair size crowd. Running in conditions made somewhat soft due to the persistent rain fall, it was the horses of the Sheriff stable that stole the spot light as Fairy Landing and Dubai Duchess scored big victories.
In the feature B class event run over a distance of 6 furlongs with a first prize of $400,000 for the Charles and Stella Kennard stakes and trophy, Fairy Landing of the Sheriff Racing stable and ridden by the Experience Jockey Colin Ross took full advantage of the conditions to race away from its opponents.
Ross, who is back home after a stint overseas, used his newly gained experience to pummel his opponent down the homestretch, Ross went wide on the drier spots as the animal raced way to take the top prize and trophy even as his opponents struggled. Fresh prospect of the Jagdeo stable with Rupert Ramnauth on the mount challenged briefly, but like the rest faded for second with Sir Balajee and King Maker rounding out the winners. Irish Girl ridden by Krishna Singh of the Singh Stable showed its class in scoring a convincing victory in the 6 furlong race for three year old Guyana and West Indies Bred horses. Irish Girl was so hot to handle as it brunt up Face the Fire and JD Junior to capture the $250,000 and the Harry Saroop trophy.
The Sheriff stable was once again in a celebratory mood as Dubai Duchess with Ross in command continued its royal pitch with another thumping victory this time in the F class event. Fresh from back to back victories in it last race Ross again went wide with Dubai Duchess and open a gap on the rest of the field for an easy victory. The Gap and Harry Dream had their dreams shattered as the champion ran away with the $250,000 and trophy compliments of telephone giants Digicel.
The Gap of the Customs Racing stable with Ross again on the Perch was in winners’ row in the G class event as it carted off the $200,000 first prize and the El Dorado trophy from stable mate Prixe Fire, South Sea and Lady of My Dreams.
Funny Sided of the Gray stable took care of things in the H class category as it hit winners row to take the $150,000 winners money and stakes compliments of the Guyana/America connections and the Rampersaud trophy.
Jamaican Jockey Andron Findley astride Funny Sided used his skill and guile to power away from the competition over the final couple of meters to take top honours as Diplomat, Sun Razor and Over the Mat were cut up and bowled over in the 6 furlong event.
Zebra was able to dazzle its opponents in somewhat murky conditions to take the days opening event. Running out of the Rumours Racing stable in the 13 category with Rupert Ramnauth on the mount, the animal held off a strong finish from Diplomat with Sun Razor and El Gato rounding out the money in the 5 Furlongs event. The win was worth $120,000 and trophy.
The JKL 6 Furlongs event with a first prize of $110,000 and the Guyana Tourism Authority trophy, which were up for grabs, was taken by Pinky of the Customs Stable with Ross in the saddles. The other placings in the 6 furlongs event were Silver Kid, Justin and Foolish Pleasure.
The Champion Jockey was Colin Ross with four wins his runner –up Rupert Ramnauth. The champion stable award went to Customs racing stable. They all received trophies and other accolades compliment Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall Bourda market and some other donors.
The days activity was by and large incident free. Close to $4M were up for grabs, which saw over 60 horses taking part.
The next race meet on the Horseracing calendar is set for Sunday March 27 at the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club, Alness Corentyne.
